We have started unit 2 in math. This involves multiplication and division. There are 9 standards we will cover. The nine CCSS standards are:
3.OA.1 I can find the products of whole numbers.
3.OA.2 I can find the quotients of whole numbers.
3.OA.3 I can use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays and measurement quantities.
3.OA.4 I can determine the unknown whole number in multiplication or division equations with 3 whole numbers.
3.OA.5 I can use the associative, distributive, commutative or identity property to solve multiplication or division problems.
3.OA.6 I understand division as an unknown-factor problem.
3.OA.7 I can fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies or properties of operations.
3.OA.8 I can solve two-step word problems using all four operations.
3.OA.9 I can look at arithmetic patterns and explains them using properties of operations.
We will be differentiating instruction beginning next week in math. We will be grouping our students into high/medium/low groups and they will be rotating to different classrooms. We have another teacher that will come in with the low group to provide an extra hand. Hopefully this will help with meeting the needs of most students.
In the classroom, we practice with flashcards and one-minute timed tests on paper and/or various websites. We can practice daily, but similar to reading, practicing at home only makes you stronger.
There are several ways you can practice at home.
· Practice with flashcards (available for around $1-2 at Walmart, Target, Dollar Store, etc). Practice for 5-10 minutes a night with your child. It would be a great idea to purchase both multiplication and division cards and towards the end of the unit, mix up the multiplication and division cards for an extra challenge.
· Utilize websites at home which are linked on the 3rd grade website, (www.wohe3rdgrade.weebly.com)
· Download free apps such as Sushi Math, math flashcards, etc.
· Verbally quiz your child in the car on the way to and from practice or games.
Please save the date for Monday, October 7th will start at 6pm. We will have a parent orientation night. This night will be divided into two parts. From 6:00-6:30 will discuss the new standards based grading in the Commons area. From 6:30-7 we will have a grade level meeting. You will also be able sign up for a parent-teacher conference time.
Don't forget the fundraiser goes until October 9th.
WOHE Wednesday shirts went home this week, please make sure your child wears this shirt on Wednesday to show our WOHE spirit!
