We are flying full steam ahead and learning new things in third grade!
This week we are beginning addition minute math. Your child will have 1 minute to complete 25 basic addition problems to build fluency to help with more difficult addition concepts in math.
We have also started writing an exit ticket. We will write these on a post it note as a simple way to assess a learning standard. If your child understands the concept, you will notice a post it note coming home once or twice a week. If your child needs additional guidance, we will keep the post it note. These are concepts we want to make sure students have mastered. We will use an exit ticket on a later date to ensure students are ready to move forward.
Reading minutes are required. In third grade for first quarter, we expect students to read 60 minutes a week. These minutes should be recorded in your child's agenda. We will increase reading minutes ten minutes per quarter. Reading at home is essential to grow as a reader.
Information about Running Club will be coming home today. Running Club is a 5 week after school club leading up to the WOHE 5k on October 19th. This club is limited to 40 students and it is first come, first served. Please return your form as soon as possible if you plan for your child to attend.
Picture Day is scheduled for next Thursday, September 12. Order forms are coming home today. Please return the order form and money by Thursday if you plan to order pictures.
Tonight is free admission for any student wearing a Willard t-shirt to the home game. The game begins at 7pm.
Wish List: Our classroom candy reward jars are running low, we would greatly appreciate small individually wrapped candy for the students, such as Tootsie Rolls, Starburst, Dum-Dum suckers, etc. Thank you in advance for your help!
Essential 55 Rules we are currently practicing in Third Grade:
Learning Units:
Math: We are over half way through our first math unit. We will be taking the test after next week. Next week we will take a Post-Formative as a way to assess students mid-way through to determine understanding of place value, addition and subtraction with and without regrouping as well as multiplying by tens.
Reading: We are continuing to build reading stamina and practice the routines and procedures for Daily 5. Next week we will give each student a DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) in preparation for small group reading.
Writing: We are continuing to work on "small moments" in our lives to write a personal narrative based on a true event.
Social Studies: We will continue learning about the types of communities.
