We have finished our first full week of school. We are slowly getting into the swing of things and our routines. Lunch times have changed for the third grade classes.
Mrs. Hurd- 11:36-12:01

Mrs. Palmer- 11:40-12:05
You should be noticing your child's agenda and take home folder coming home and being returned to school each day. Please take the time to review the agenda objectives we cover in class. This is a great opportunity to ask your child what he or she has learned that day. You can also document reading minutes in the bottom right portion of the agenda.
We have started reading minutes. Reading minutes begin each Friday afternoon and will be counted the following Friday morning. Please make sure your child is reading at least 60 minutes a week. This breaks down to about 10 minutes over 6 nights to equal 60 minutes. Reading at home is essential to help your child become a better reader in the classroom. Reading aloud is important, but it is very helpful to also take the time to discuss the book with your child. What was the setting? Who are the characters? Is there a problem in the story? How was the problem solved? Are there interesting vocabulary words in the story? Comprehension to understand reading is just as important as reading fluency.
This year, we will not have a regular Friday spelling test. Instead, we will focus on learning word formations and spelling patterns in a word work block of time at school without the need for a spelling test.
In Third Grade, we are focusing on Essential 55 Rules. These are essential rules to use in everyday life which help us interact in a respectful way. Today we introduced the rule, "Always say, "thank you" when you are given something." We would like the students to focus on saying please and thank you when asking for things or after they have been given something.
Learning Units:
Reading- We will continue building our reading stamina as well as learning how our classroom procedures will run during Daily 5 time.
Writing- We will continue working on ideas and visualizing for writing.
Math- We started a unit about place value and rounding. We will continue to practice rounding to the 10's and 100's as well as adding and subtracting with regrouping.
Social Studies- We started a unit with map (geography) skills and communities. Next week we will learn about the types of communities.
